My suggestion to position gridlines only every five coordinates was based on the hunch that gridlines at every coordinate would make the map a bit too cluttered. Your OracleCard maps confirm this, in my opinion. But I also wonder if "every five" will work out to too few, as you suggest. Let's look at 2,3,4, and 5. I'll get back to you with examples later. I fail to understand your point about a relationship between gridlines and smoothing.

On the subject of your "lacy" smoothing: I view the new coastlines as interesting, but distracting. I'm leaning toward dumping this algorithm altogether and looking for a different way to smooth. What do you think?

The tape is home from the Post Office, and will likely get recorded tomorrow. And I'll target a late November/early December Archipelago shipment.
